The research started early. Subject: keyboards, and how to occupy them.

Entropy is diligently trying to learn the next trick. Nobody asked him to. He is doing it anyway.

Where Zeta plans, Entropy experiments. He looks at you intently trying to discern what could get you to give him more attention. He sits impatiently, jumping at the chance to squiggle into and onto what is currently occupying you. His experiments are relentless and sometimes even successful.

Soft gray with a white chest and white toes, a plume of a tail, and the round-eyed look of someone who has just thought of something. He is the more sociable of the two, and will supervise your work from an inconvenient distance of about four inches.

The Name

Entropy could have been Fig. In the tiny kitten phase, when he was still with his mom, the name Fig fit his smaller, rounder self. But the household's professional interests—minds accustomed to information theory, and the inexorable tendency of disorder to increase—gravitated toward something more fundamental. Entropy. The measure of disorder and the arrow of time itself. A name that captures not just what he is, but what he does: taking ordered systems (an untouched countertop, your best intentions) and testing them until order gives way, just like the second law of thermodynamics demands.
